Pianist Jane Hastay and husband bassist Peter Martin Weiss will perform on Sundays throughout July and August from 6 to 10 p.m. as part of the Sunday Summer Jazz Series at the Ram’s Head Inn on Shelter Island.
Peter and Jane produce a concert series called “Art of Song” at the Bridgehampton Historical Society in the fall and winter and are bringing many of their featured guests to the Ram’s Head this summer. Both Peter and Jane are life-long musicians, both receiving master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and have performed worldwide.
One of the musicians featured is trumpeter and Islander Dick Behrke, who was Bobby Darin’s arranger and a conductor and award-winning arranger of commercials before he retired. Other performers include North Fork vocalist Darcy; alto saxophonist John Ludlow, a protege of the late, great Sag Harbor saxophonist Hal McKusick; New York City swing vocalist Vanessa Trouble; vocalist Lilly Merat; and Cole Rumbough, who will be singing selections from his show “Around the World in 80 Days.”
On August 4, the musicians will perform “Remembering Rebecca, a Musical Tribute,” dedicated to Islander Rebecca Dorsey who succumbed to cancer last summer. Many of the musicians who accompanied her over the years will play. Ms. Hastay said, “Rebecca was instrumental in getting the Art of Song concerts started.”
She added, “The Ram’s Head Inn is one of our favorite venues. The piano is excellent, there are comfortable chairs to settle back and listen and room to do a little dancing for those who are inclined. We’re very excited to be bringing an array of accomplished musicians to Shelter Island.”
