On The Rock: Summer at The Dory

This summer, live music and waterfront dining continue to draw people to The Dory. The bar/restaurant has a nautical, intimate feel to it, creating an atmosphere that is sure to make anyone feel at home. The real attraction is an outdoor dining deck that overlooks Chase Creek.

After a tough spring season, owner Jack Kiffer is grateful for the warm weather. “Most of our seating is outside on the deck — that’s where you want to be when it’s nice out. By the water,” he said.

Open for lunch and dinner, The Dory offers a simple menu with all the staples: soup, salad, burgers, steak, and fish and chips, but the specials are the heart of the restaurant. “We’re always changing our daily specials. It all depends on what fish is being caught or in season,” Mr. Kiffer said. The specials menu typically includes locally caught fish — striped bass and bluefish right now — and also local produce.

If you aren’t looking for a place to eat, but rather a place to relax and enjoy a few drinks, The Dory has a full bar with seating in addition to its dining rooms. On weekends and even some weeknights, you can hear the sounds of live music from the stage on the deck. People such as Freddy Cole (Nat King Cole’s brother) and Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks have performed, bringing their big band sound to The Dory.

This iconic, 125-seat restaurant on Shelter Island is open daily for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and dinner at 4 p.m. and is located on Bridge Street in the Heights. It’s hard to miss — look for the dory perched on the roof. For more information and details about the live music call (631) 749-4300 or visit their website.

  • The place is lovely; I want to visit it someday. It looks very relaxing. I am guessing the food would be great as good as the place. But as the saying goes, “you will never know unless you try”. That is why my friends and I are planning to go there for vacation.
