Shelter Island piping plovers coming through a perilous season

Our friend and photographer Don Bindler was on Shell Beach over the weekend and sent us photographs.

“The piping plover breeding season was off to a rough start,” Don writes. “It appears that two of the nests on Shell Beach failed. However, the good news is that there are at least two healthy chicks scampering around the beach.
