If you’re on Shelter island and looking for a great view to go with your lunch or you just want a quiet place to sit and relax, head over to Dering Harbor Marina on N. Ferry Road. Hidden behind Marie Eiffel Marketplace is a little piece of heaven.
Wooden tables and Adirondack chairs from the marketplace line the deck along with several picnic tables covered with umbrellas to keep the sun out. Boats in the marina bob up and down as seagulls fly by overhead.
Marketplace owner Marie Eiffel knows how much customers enjoy the spot and takes great care to make sure it remains a favorite for everyone.
“I did it without music, so people can just sit there,” she said.
“No Cellphones” signs are posted to keep the area free of noise and like a mother hen, Eiffel makes sure customers adhere to it.
“The other day someone was bla bla-ing on their phone and I said ‘You’re disturbing the environment, you have to leave,'” she said.
Anyone can sit and enjoy the view, you don’t need to make a purchase at the marketplace.
“It’s like a little park,” Eiffel said. “It’s a public place.”
In just one hour on a recent afternoon, the venue welcomed families eating lunch, couples drinking coffee and construction workers enjoying a late afternoon sandwich.
“It’s for people like me who are not lucky enough to have a house on the water,” she said. “This is their house on the water. The construction workers come here because it’s their house on the water. The people of Shelter Island meet here, it’s a great meeting place.”
Now that you’ve found the spot, go there enjoy what Marie Eiffel Marketplace has to offer. The gourmet deli serves a variety of delicious edibles including fresh coffee, organic produce, hand-rolled pizza, homemade pastries, sandwiches, salads and smoothies.
“The people of Shelter Island love that place and the tourists love that place,” Eiffel said. “It’s a little bit of paradise.”
The Dering Harbor Marina deck is located behind Marie Eiffel Marketplace at 184 N. Ferry Road on Shelter Island, NY.
