“It’s my first ownership. It feels good, it’s very exciting.”

Owner Harry Brigham is excited. He has worked in the restaurant business for 20 years, but this is his first foray into restaurant ownership and he’s set his eyes on “Vue,” the new restaurant at the Shelter Island Country Club.

“I had worked at the club for two years and I saw what could be a great spot, so myself and two of my friends decided to take the lease,” he said.

Brigham and his partners renamed the restaurant “Vue,” based on its beautiful setting. The building sits on a hill that overlooks the golf course and hills of Shelter island.

“Hence the name,” he said. “That was the hardest thing for us, figuring out a name. One of my friends is very creative and he came up with this. At first we all scratched our heads, looked at the name. Then the next day, we all said, ‘You know what?’ We liked it.”

The name and menu may be new, but Brigham wants to keep the restaurant’s traditions alive.

“This is a family-style restaurant, the kids play on the putting green, we try to keep the style of food comfortable for everybody. We’ve got a children’s menu and we want to keep prices affordable for families the best we can,” he said.

Brigham wants Vue to appeal to both visitors and local residents. He understands how the restaurant business works on Shelter Island. “It’s a shorter season then anywhere else. It starts this weekend (July 4th) and ends on Labor Day. You get your spots in between on weekends, but once school is out you get your customers.”

Vue’s customers are very important to Brigham and he wants them to feel at home.

“It’s laid back, it’s comfortable. We’re happy that we do have a good amount of locals who come and support us,” he said. “That was one of our missions. This is a great little golf course, it’s affordable and we want people to come here to play golf and eat. It’s a casual place to enjoy some fresh seafood, great steaks, a burger and a real lively bar.”

Vue Restaurant and Bar is located at 26 Sunnyside Drive and open six days a week, serving lunch and dinner.
