Locals, visitors, and volleyball-lovers alike will face off on Crescent Beach on August 1 during a beach volleyball tournament to benefit the Shelter Island Public Library.
The event, which is organized by Friends of the Shelter Island Public Library and is in its second year, welcomes players of all skill levels to participate.
Ann Biddlecom, who helped create the event, said the tournament is very low-key and welcomes competitive as well as recreational teams.
“The event was inspired by locals who don’t mind a few pebbles on the beach,” said Biddlecom. “The best part of it is that we’re all in support of the library, having fun for a good cause.”
The tournament is made of competitive-only four-person teams or competitive and recreational six-person teams. Teams must include at least one female and participants must be 12 years or older. All players will receive a tournament T-shirt, bottled water and a raffle ticket. The event starts at 9 a.m. and the rain date is Sunday, August 2.
The fee is $100 per four-person team plus $20 per additional player. Checks can be made to “Friends of the Shelter Island Library” and mailed to: The Friends of the Shelter Island Library, PO Box 2016, North Ferry Road, Shelter Island, NY 11964.
Registration is due July 27.
The winning team will receive a trophy.
