Galerie Mallory is not your average art gallery. And that’s exactly how owner Mallory Samson wants it.

In fact, she doesn’t even call her space an art gallery.

“I’m calling it a creative laboratory for curious people and fun art exhibits,” she said.

Galerie Mallory will host “The Birdhouse Exhibition and Auction,” a two-week exhibit that begins on Sunday showcasing and auctioning off birdhouses designed by local Shelter Island and East End artists, celebrities and conservationists.

Some Shelter Island residents who have donated birdhouses include Jonathan Adler, Simon Doonan and Marie Eiffel. Proceeds from the two-week silent auction will benefit the Peconic Land Trust conservation efforts.

Bids will start being taken this Sunday at an opening reception at Galerie Mallory from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The exhibit runs through Aug. 9, at which point the silent auction will close at 5:45 p.m.

Images of all the birdhouses up for auction will be posted to the Peconic Land Trust website by Sunday for interested parties who cannot get to the gallery in person.

Samson will be photographing the birdhouses this weekend. A former fashion editor, stylist and creative photographer, she has worked for Ina Garten, Martha Stewart, J. Crew and Bride’s Magazine.

“All of my jobs have dealt with photography in some way, shape or form. It really is visual marketing, so this gallery pulls together my entire background,” she explained.

After the birdhouse exhibit, Galerie Mallory will feature an exhibit by San Francisco artist Denise Fiedler.  Fiedler’s latest venture is Paste, a creative take on the art of collage. After that, Samson will feature an exhibit of some of her own work.

“Part of what I want to do with the gallery is give back to different charities,” said Ms. Samson. “It’s a vehicle for my ideas, but it’s also a Shelter Island vision I have to give back to the community.”

Galerie Mallory is located at 183 North Ferry Road on Shelter Island.
