August 9 will be the date of the second Second Sunday Summer Strings concert at Sylvester Manor. Given its location on the creekside stage, one attendee at last month’s concert said we could also add “sunset” to the title.
Our next show will feature the Wiles, a trio from Maine comprised of two fiddles, two guitars, a doghouse bass and two (sometimes three) intertwining voices. Ellie Buckland, Isa Burke and Mali Obomsawin will perform a repertoire that reaches across the breadth of American roots music, from centuries-old Appalachian ballads to classic country to contemporary Americana songwriting. They bring soul, energy, depth and effervescent vocal harmonies to honest music that blends the old with the new.
This will be the second visit to Shelter Island for Isa Burke, who was the featured fiddler for our contra dance here in May.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students; kids under 10 are free. Call the Manor at 749-0626 or visit eventbrite.com. Bring your own chairs and blankets. The gates open at 4:30 p.m.; the show begins at 5 p.m.
Don’t forget, you can also buy tickets for our third and final concert of the series, the amazing Québécois duo, Yanne Falquet and Pascal Gemme, on September 13.
