For 51 years, generations of Islanders have relished the food and camaraderie of the Fire Department’s chicken barbecue, maybe not realizing the work involved in bringing the annual tradition to life. The community event is held on the third saturday in August each year at St. Gabriels field on the corner of Cartwright and Burns Roads

Over 50 volunteers, including members of the fire department, ladies auxiliary and the community, worked for days preparing the Aug. 15 feast, setting up and breaking down.

Those same volunteers will be at again for the Country Fair, which is set for Aug. 22 at the center firehouse and will feature live music, games and food stands.
