Labor Day may mean the unofficial end to summer, but there’s still plenty to do this holiday weekend on the North Fork and Shelter Island.

Friday, Sept. 4

Art and Music — The Perlman Music Program hosts an exhibition of Shelter Island artists at Clark Arts Center. Love Lane First Fridays — The shops of Love Lane will stay open late on Friday to encourage people to come out and stay a while. “First Fridays” is a collaborative event among merchants and North Fork purveyors to attract both visitors and locals alike to Love Lane, stay late and enjoy what the area has to offer. Stores and restaurants will extend their hours for the event.

Saturday, September 5

Annual Snapper Derby – A Shelter Island tradition hosted by the Shelter Island Lions Club and free to all kids. Go fishing and bring in your largest snapper and/or bluefish. Prizes for first through fifth places will be awarded for the largest in each fish category. Weigh-in is at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 281 School St., Shelter Island.(631) 749-1180. Back to the Bays 5K – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County’s Marine Program and Peconic Estuary Program will host its first “Back to the Bays 5K” Saturday, Sept. 5. $25 general registration, $20 for Back to the Bay members. 25th annual Boy Scout Car Show — Antique, classic, collector, street rod, custom cars & trucks. Registered vehicles must be from 1995 or earlier. Pre-registration show car & driver, $15; at the gate, $20. Pre-registered vehicles from 1942 or earlier, free. General admission, $15; ages 12 and under, free with parent admission. Craft Fair —  The Greenport PTA hosts a craft and gift fair on the school grounds.  Many unique and beautiful items for sale. All proceeds benefit the PTA. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Greenport High School, Route 25.

Bug Lighthouse Tour & Cruise – Visit the Long Beach Bar (Bug) Lighthouse. Ticket includes admission to Bug Light, narrated tour and round-trip boat ride to lighthouse. Mashomack Preserve (Haul a Seine) — Help pull in a 300’ haul seine (a fishing net) and get a close up look at the creatures and plants that live under the sea. A haul can bring in striped bass, bluefish, porgies, fluke, flounder, and several species of crab. This demonstration of a traditional East End fishing method is for children and adults. Yoga — Well-known New York City author, yoga teacher and instructor trainer Elena Brower will hold a practice on the North Fork this Labor Day weekend. Brower will teach a class at North Fork Yoga Shala in Greenport on Sunday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. until noon. North Fork Yoga Shala is located at 430 Main St. (second floor) in Greenport.
