When it comes to listing the most expensive zip codes in the United States, some are not a big surprise, like parts of Manhattan, San Francisco and the Hamptons.

But Shelter Island and portions of the surrounding area are now a part of that list: Forbes’ 500 most expensive zip codes in the country.

To compile the addresses, Forbes used the real estate research firm Altos Research, which examined the median home price data of more then 29,5000 zip codes in the U.S., representing 95% of the American population.

Sagaponack (11962), in the heart of the Hamptons, was No. 2 on the list with a median price of $7,416,538.

Elsewhere in our region, Sag Harbor (11963) came in at No. 136  with a median housing price of $1,882,471, mostly due to its proximity to the Hamptons.

Next was Shelter Island (11964) at No. 334 with a median price of $1,216,346.

And the first North Fork hamlet to crack the top 500 list was Peconic (11958) at No. 397 with a median price of $1,115,260.

The top three most expensive zip codes on the list are:

Atherton, California (94027) has a median price of $10,564,038 and is where much of Silicon Valley’s corporate elite reside.

New York City (10012) has a median price of $7,302,117 and is on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
