Whoever said health food can’t be good or good food can’t be healthy never ate at Provisions Organic Cafe in Sag Harbor.
This South Fork gem is hidden down a narrow walkway off Main Street, near the corner of Bay and Division streets. If staffers didn’t put out a sign advertising the daily specials, you might miss it.
Along with the organic cafe is a complete natural foods market inside the same facility. But the food at Provisions is not just for vegetarians or vegans. They also incorporate organic cheeses and hormone/antibiotic free poultry into some of their menu items.
This is a place where locals eat. On one particularly cold afternoon, the warm and cozy café was bustling with couples, young people, teens, moms and their kids, either ordering lunch to go or packing the tables as they ate.
Provisions Organic Cafe serves breakfast and lunch daily and also has a full service juice bar with smoothies and fresh made juices. Soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps and burritos are part of the everyday lunch menu, but there is also a daily menu of specials like their chicken arugula wrap, roasted portobello and zucchini spaghetti and chickpea stirfry.
On a recent visit we tried the portobello quesadillas lunch special.
Three soft quesadillas are stuffed with roasted portobello mushrooms, melted monterey jack cheese, and bean purée and served in sun-dried tomato tortillas with a side of real guacamole and tomato salsa ($13.25.)
The quesadillas are thick and cheesy and the mushrooms add substance. The bean curd acts as more of a filler and is dominated by the taste of melted cheese, mushrooms and tortilla.
The meal is tasty, satisfying, and will not leave you still hungry as some so-called “healthy meals” do.
