The planting season is finally here and Shelter Island’s Sylvester Manor Educational Farm has opened up the wait list for its community supported agriculture program.
When the farm begins processing this year’s CSA applications in about a month or two, preference will first be given to last year’s members, according to Sylvester Manor farm manager Julia Trunzo. After that, she’ll know how many spaces remain and can begin drawing namess from the wait list.
Trunzo said to expect a wide variety of produce this year, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, beets, carrots, radishes, squash, melons and greens like kale, chard and lettuce.
“We’ll also have ‘pick your own blackberries,’ plus flowers will also be part of the share,” she said.
Sylvester Manor’s CSA begins in mid-June and runs through October. Members will have two days in which to pick up their produce, Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
“We’ll also have produce at the farm stand, plus a lot of local products, from soaps and body sprays, to fudge, bread, cheese and pies,” Trunzo said. “We also have our own meat for sale; pork lamb and eggs, so you can come to our farm stand as a CSA member or just anybody and really make yourself a meal.”
A CSA allows farmers to sell a certain amount of produce “shares” to the general public while the customers’ investment helps alleviate farming expenses. During the growing season, the produce is distributed among the CSA community.
To get on the Sylvester Manor CSA wait list, applicants can visit sylvestermanor.org and click on the CSA link. Their information will be compiled and stored.
If an applicant doesn’t hear from Ms. Trunzo within several days, they can e-mail her at email@example.com.
The Sylvester Manor Farmstand will be open this Saturday, March 12, from 1 to 3 p.m., selling eggs and some greens. The newly born baby fainting goats will also be on display.
The farm stand will officially open in May. Regular days and hours have not yet been announced.
The Sylvester Manor farm stand is located at 21 Manwaring Road in Shelter Island.
