Mother’s Day is fast approaching. So what kind of gift will tell the mom in your life just how much you love her?
Well, if she loves Shelter Island, how about a necklace created with beads made from North and South Ferry receipts?
Certainly original … decidedly local.
Just in time for Mother’s Day, Havens Store on the grounds of the Shelter Island Historical Society is open for business and stocked with a wide array of unique Island-made merchandise — including ferry ticket necklaces, earrings and bracelets courtesy of Shelter Island Turquoise.
“They’re made by Moriah Moore,” explained Alexandra Binder who runs Havens Store. “She takes the ferry ticket, cuts it into long triangle shapes and rolls it around a lollipop stick. Then she shellacs them to make beads and strings them together.”
“She originally had a booth and sold them at a library craft fair,” added Binder. “People saw them there and said we should have them.”
Now, they do. Havens Store is selling the earrings for $11, with bracelets going for $13.25 and necklaces $22 — tax included.
And with the North Ferry currently in the process of moving toward a digital ticketing system, some of these pieces may be true collectors items very soon.
“They’re kind of a limited edition,” Binder said.
Havens Store, located at 16 South Ferry Road, Shelter Island, is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to jewelry, the store sells a number of other items hand-crafted by Shelter Island residents, and, for the history buff in your family, also carries a large selection of books about the Island’s long and storied past.
By the way, if your mom happens to live further afield, Binder can ship Havens Store items for you. Call her at (631) 749-0025 or visit shelterislandhistorical.org to place an order.
