Part of being on Shelter Island, especially in the spring and summer, is finding treats in unexpected places.

Such as the result of some property owners with too much of something putting it out on street stands to manage the overabundance.

You might see anything, from blueberries to eggs to flowers — and what’s up with firewood? — or all of the above and more.

In contrast with your garden variety lemonade stand, these little booths are unmanned for most of the day.

Those running an “honor stand” trust their customers will pay the correct amount and they’ve told us they haven’t seen many criminals among us taking advantage.
