With an eye on keeping the annual Shelter Island fireworks show alive for years to come, Shelter Island Fireworks Inc. is hosting a pair of fundraisers, including one scheduled for Friday, June 17 at Sunset Beach.
On Friday, June 17, Sunset Beach will be supporting Shelter Island fireworks with an open bar from 6 to 9 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and raffles.
The non-profit, which was founded by a group of local residents last year, has its eye on raising $40,000 for this year’s show, which scheduled for Saturday July 9.
“$40,000 is a lot of money and it’s not easy to raise that much,” said organization founder Brett Surerus. “But we are doing what we can in order to keep the tradition alive and some local businesses are assisting with the efforts.”
Believing this tradition of over 50 years needed to be kept alive, Mr. Surerus and several friends stepped up and raised the necessary funds to put on the show last year. By doing this, they took over the role as the new event organizers, taking the role of the Chamber of Commerce.
“We reached out to a number of local businesses and asked for their help,” Mr. Surerus said. “Sunset Beach stepped up and offered to do a cocktail party to benefit the fireworks show.”
A pre-fireworks fundraiser will also be held on Friday, July 8, at SALT Waterfront Bar and Grill. It will feature raffles, giveaways, food and local music.
