The 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday, May 6. Billed as “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” while it’s amazing to see these thoroughbreds run in person, if you’re not able to travel to Churchill Downs in time for this weekend’s race there’s a fine alternative right here on Shelter Island.

The Shelter Island Historical Society hosts its annual Kentucky Derby Members’ Party from 4 to 7 p.m. on Derby Day. The party will take place in the society’s Havens Barn where the race will be screened on two large screens (the wearing of ascots and derby hats is strongly encouraged). Come see if the favorite “Always Dreaming” can make it happen, or whether he’ll outpaced by “Battle of Midway” or “Classic Empire,” the second and third ranked horses.

The Derby party is a “thank you” and free to current Historical Society members. Not a member yet? It’s not too late. New members can join the Shelter Island Historical Society now for $50 — and on Saturday, come watch the “Run for the Roses. For more information on membership, visit www.shelterislandhistorical.org or call (631) 749-0025.
