With summer around the corner, you know what comes next — hitting the beach. Before you get there, however, you may be pleased to know that Shelter Island Yoga & Fitness is up and running — and offering a range of workout classes for every interest and ability.

Group lessons include TRX, a workout system that uses suspension training to leverage gravity and bodyweight. Participants control just how much of a challenge they want for each exercise — because a simple adjustment of body position will add or decrease resistance.

Or you may prefer mat Pilates classes, which condition the body through a series of controlled movements designed to strengthen the core and tone and lengthen muscles.

Shelter Island Yoga & Fitness also offers spinning classes with an instructor on a lead bike calling out commands. Trainers guide participants through the workout phases by calling for sprints, climbs, and up-tempo cadences all accompanied by music designed to get you moving and keep you going.

For those who like to shake their hips, Zumba is a fitness program that involves dance and aerobic elements. The choreography incorporates hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and even some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Squats and lunges are also included at no extra charge.

Since this facility is called Shelter Island Yoga & Fitness, count on having several different styles of yoga classes to choose from in the months ahead, including Vinyasa yoga which is designed to link breath and movement, leading practitioners into postures through a dynamic and fluid sequence. Moves include sun salutations, standing poses, balancing poses, twists, backbends and gentle inversions. Even if you’re not an expert yogi, don’t worry, this class is suitable for beginners as well as advanced practitioners with variations provided for all levels.

In addition to classes, Shelter Island Yoga & Fitness offers gym memberships, tennis lessons, personal training and kids programs. The gym is open Monday to Friday from 7 to 11 a.m. and again from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Right now, there’s a pre-Memorial Day sale on memberships and multiple class-packs and Shelter Island Yoga & Fitness.
