In 2015 when Salt Hotels opened the doors of The Chequit, the newly refurbished and reborn grand dame of Shelter Island quickly became a favorite for those seeking a stylish retreat.
This season, those who have come to love The Chequit will be pleased to know a few new offerings have been added to the lineup for summer ‘17.
Under the heading of “what’s new” is an expanded selection of fresh baked goods at the inn’s White Hill Café, a new selection of merchandise across the street at Salt Supply (the property’s lifestyle retail shop) and tasty new menu items at Red Maple, the bar and restaurant which operates on the lower level of The Chequit.
Here’s a little more detail on the offerings:
White Hill Café
You can still count on getting a cup of Jack’s Coffee (www.jacksstirbrew.com) at the White Hill Café (www.thechequit.com/cafe/), but now get ready to be tempted by delicious baked goods including breads, cookies and cakes and treats by Baked from NYC. Also, don’t miss the “Take and Bake Cinnamon Rolls,” a tray of six that you bake at home — which will make many a house guest happily drool this summer.
“We found that both visitors and locals were looking for fresh baked goods, particularly bread and breakfast treats,” said Jason Mancuso, The Chequit’s general manager. “So we wanted to offer that on the Island.”
The café will also sell a small selection of sandwiches daily which will be based on the availability of market fresh ingredients.
For those in search of a little retail therapy, across the street at Salt Supply (www.thechequit.com/saltsupply), which opens for its second year on Memorial Day weekend, features a distinctive collection of products from small independent designers, craftsman and manufacturers. Choose from beach towels and picnic supplies to clothing and jewelry. It’s also a great place to pick up small home décor and hostess gifts and wrapping. Salt Supply. Opens Memorial Day weekend.
Finally, at Red Maple (www.thechequit.com/redmaple), the property’s rustic American restaurant and bar, a brand new menu is slated for Summer 2017.
A few of the new menu items include:
A new selection of flatbreads, including one with Morbier cheese, beer-braised onions and Italian sausage.
Raw bar of oysters and clams served with a trio of house made mignonettes, including Passion fruit, cucumber shallot, and blood orange, along with the homemade Bloody Mary cocktail sauce.
New entrées include root beer-glazed pork belly with warm German potato salad; beef scaloppini with tomato, garlic and gorgonzola over house made pasta; and coriander-dusted sea scallop served with spinach and bamboo rice.
Chef Cheryl Scarberry’s brownie sundae (which brings guests in from far and wide), has a rival this year with her liege waffle which glistens with caramelized sugar and is served with caramel gelato and root beer syrup.
Taken all together, it adds up to more reasons why people have come to love this place … not that we’re counting!
