As Mashomack Preserve volunteers gear up in preparation for providing nesting sites for the eastern bluebirds, 57 boxes stand ready to welcome the returning birds for the 17th year of this project.

These nest boxes are set throughout the eight meadows on the preserve that provide excellent bluebird habitat. The past 16 years of monitoring the bluebird nests along with the tree swallows which nest close to them, and now, purple martins, are helping us to spot trends in their habits and movements. Musically speaking, this will be an active weekend on Shelter Island with the Presbyterian Church slated to host not one, not two, but three very different concerts in the days ahead.

First up on Friday, March 17 is a good dose of folk music with fiddler Katie McNally and pianist Neil Pearlman who play traditional tunes from Scotland and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church and is presented by Sylvester Manor Educational Farm. (more…)
