In this day and age, events like Black Friday or Cyber Monday with their endless “door busters” and cut-throat stampede consumerism may be a blood sport for some shoppers, but for many of us, that sort of thing is hardly an effective way to evoke the holiday spirit.
What ever happened to good old-fashioned civilized shopping? The kind where you didn’t have to jump in your car, sit in traffic and fight for a space in a jam-packed parking lot (to say nothing of engaging in fist-fights over the last reindeer sweater on the rack).
Personally, we prefer strolling along picturesque lanes beautifully adorned for the holidays as we pop in and out of mom and pop shops in search of just the right gift — be it the magical, unexpected or delightfully original. Along the way, we relish the opportunity to catch up with shopkeepers by finding out more about the products they sell or offering our best wishes for the year ahead. (more…)

We hate to be alarmists, but do you realize that Christmas is only seven weeks away? Yes, it’s true — and even though the jack-o-lanterns haven’t yet collapsed, the leaves are still on the trees and we haven’t even thought about the Thanksgiving menu yet, it’s time to start seriously tuning into the gift giving season.
Fortunately, the Shelter Island Historical Society is making it easy for the early birds among us. This Saturday, November 5, they kick off the season with a “Holiday Store Shopping Day in Havens Barn” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (more…)

For those who enjoy indulging in a little country living with a visit to Sylvester Manor’s farm stand, there’s now a Sylvester Manor store where you can pick up a little something special for friends, family or even yourself.
The Sylvester Manor Gatehouse, a new pop-up shop, is now open weekends until November 27. Inside, expect to find farm-centric home and garden gifts, as well as food items made or grown on Shelter Island or the East End.
Last weekend, the Gatehouse began offering fresh pies for sale. (more…)
