On the warm evening of Saturday, July 8, families and friends met on Crescent Beach, fighting a strong breeze as they spread out blankets and opened up chairs for the 60th Annual Shelter Island Fireworks. Way back in 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, into space, Elvis Presley bought a mansion in Memphis and named it Graceland, and Shelter Island residents were enjoying the first fireworks show in the skies over the dark blue of the nighttime bay.
In the years that have followed, those fireworks have become an annual tradition, and this year’s 60th annual Shelter Island Fireworks Show will be Saturday, July 8 at Crescent Beach. READ

The 6th annual Friends of the Library Turkey Plunge at Crescent Beach Saturday morning, with all proceeds gong to the library, was once again one of the most joyous events of the season.
With temperatures approaching 60 and no wind, veteran plungers responded with bravado; one participant said, “It’s a day at the beach,” and a local who hails from the other side of the pond compared the morning to “a summer’s day in England.”

Glamour magazine’s September issue is one of the most anticipated of the year, but local subscribers have an added bonus to look forward to this season: The cover and main fashion spread, starring model Karlie Kloss, were shot on Shelter Island.
Glamour’s crew told us they shot both the cover and interior photograph series at a private residence on the secluded island, but kept mum on additional details.
“We found the perfect location that suited our concept,” a Glamour magazine rep said. (more…)
