Visitors to Shelter Island love the beaches, woods, events and eateries on the island, but first-timers don’t always now the extent of the diversity of the community.

Terry Lucas of the Shelter Island Public Library and Cindy Belt of Mashomack Preserve put their heads together over the winter and came up with the idea of the Shelter Island Scavenger Hunt.  (more…)

Catch a Great Read at the Shelter Island Island Library and get this great tote bag, plus a chance to win a Kindle.

The Shelter Island Public Library is bustling on this mid-July afternoon. Children, out of school for the summer, fill the young reader section, identified by a giant giraffe poster on the wall. In the main room, adults sit in chairs, reading quietly while the main desk is nearly three deep with librarians and assistants.

It doesn’t look as if this library could handle anymore activity, but that’s exactly what it’s striving for with the new adult reading program, “Catch a Great Read.” (more…)

On Tuesday, January 7 at 7 p.m., Movies at the Library will begin its 10th year with the age-appropriate comedy “10.” Directed by Blake Edwards from his own script, it pre-dates his “Panther” movies but shares some of their zaniness and sheer idiocy.  (more…)

We close our 2013 fall season of Movies at the Library with “The Big Lebowski,” 117 minutes of cinematic frippery from Joel and Ethan Coen—the same team that wrote, produced and directed the Academy Award-winning “Fargo” and before that, “Raising Arizona,” the picture that put the Coen Brothers on the cinematic map.
