Shelter Island is more than a charming, boring version of the Hamptons, a bucolic identity that travel writers have stuck on it. It has been a phenomenal, gastronomic year for the East End. As I ate my way through, I discovered new bites, eateries and events, including the North Fork Foodie Tour and the newly debuted East End Mushroom Cook-Off. Each of the 10 foods on this list stand out not only for their bountiful, local ingredients, but for how they highlight the work of the talented chefs who take the utmost pleasure in serving their customers. These talented culinary experts often work nearly around the clock to deliver the best-tasting experience to their patrons. (more…)

If you’re looking for a real down-home Christmas tree lighting, nothing beats Shelter Island’s annual event, which unofficially ushers in the holiday season on the island.

Hosted by the Shelter Island Chamber of Commerce, a live Norway Spruce grown outside the town police department will be lit Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. WLNG Radio will be there and members of the Shelter Island High School band will perform. As many as 120 people attended last year’s event.
