It’s tent week at the Shelter Island Library

If you’re driving past the library this week and wondering what that tent is there for, we’re happy to announce it’s tent week on Shelter Island.

For eight days from Sunday, July 5 through July 12 the Shelter Island Library will present programs for adults and children alike under a tent supplied by Rob Strauss of Shelter Island Party Rentals.

Here’s what’s happening each day:

Sunday, July 5

The week kicks off on the 5th with a Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. There will be hardcovers, paperbacks and DVDs to keep you entertained all summer long. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for our Adult Summer Reading Program, “Catch a Great Read @ Shelter Island Public Library.” Participants will receive a tote bag after finishing four books of their choice, may enter to win a grand prize at the end of the program and join us for a wrap-up party.

Monday, July 6

The next day brings Mystery Monday under the Tent! From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Anthony Award-winning writer Jason Starr will lead a panel of mystery authors including Christopher Bollen, author of the acclaimed new novel, “Orient”; Chrystle Fiedler, Greenport resident and author of the Natural Remedies mysteries; Matthew Quinn Martin, Islander and author of the Nightlife novels; and John Roche, author of the gritty new novel, “Bronx Bound.” Reed Farrel Coleman, award-winning author, who has recently taken over Robert B. Parker’s Jesse Stone series, will speak following the panel discussion.

Tuesday, July 7

This day sees the return of an old favorite — the Goat on a Boat puppet show. At 3:30 p.m., puppeteer Liz Joyce will perform “The Doubtful Sprout and the Secret Life of Soil — An Underground Odyssey.” This show will delight children and their parents.

Wednesday, July 8

Bring a picnic dinner and rock out from 4 to 6 p.m., to the family friendly music of the D-Fenders. Scott Kennedy and company will get you on your feet and dancing to some tunes from the Beach Boys, the Beatles and other favorites.

Thursday, July 9

Enjoy a movie under the stars when we screen “Big Hero 6.” This family film, which is sponsored by Shelter Island Party Rentals, is full of adventure, comedy and heart.

Friday, July 10

Start your weekend off on the right foot with Yoga under the Tent with Arleen West at 10 a.m. Bring a mat and enjoy a complimentary yoga class as you head toward a busy weekend. Later, at 6:30 p.m., Islander Sarah Shepherd will lead a drumming circle. She will provide a variety of drums; everyone is welcome to join in as she leads the circle.

Saturday, July 11

At 11 a.m., Chip Bryant, the Silent Clown, will come to the tent to entertain us. Chip has performed variety arts shows since 1986, always receiving rave reviews. This program is sponsored by 4EC.

Sunday, July 12

Finish the week off  from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the popular annual tag sale hosted by the Friends of the Library. Call the library to reserve a table and sell those things you no longer use.  Or just come by to browse and pick up a few treasures.

All events are free. For more information, call the library at 749-0042.  Visit Pinterest for links about participating writers and artists
