The crowds are gone, the weather is comfortable and Shelter Island is still hopping with activity. This weekend is a great time to sample the Island’s seafood, community activities and local traditions.

Here are five activities to check out.

Saturday, October 10

Sylvester Manor Shuck & Sing aka Garlic Popping & Seafood party

Manor workers and volunteers will shuck garlic (separating the bulbs into cloves for planting the next morning), sing and share food, including a seafood feast. Shucking and singing is totally free, but tickets to the seafood feast are $25 per person. The dinner is B.Y.O.B. and feel free to bring a potluck dish if you want. The event will take place at the manor farm stand at 21 Manwaring Road at 6 p.m. Visit to purchase tickets for the seafood feast.

Sunday, October 11

Sylvester Manor Plant & Sing

On Sunday morning, friends of Sylvester Manor will plant the garlic shucked the night before. The event starts with a volunteer breakfast at 8 a.m. and volunteers then head out into the fields at 9 a.m.  Bring a pair of gloves and a pair of lungs. A Sylvester Manor song expert will lead workers through a series of “work songs” as they work the field. Meet at the windmill field at 21 Manwaring Road.

Plant & Sing Music Festival

After all the planting is done, kick back for the annual Plant & Sing music festival. Every October, Sylvester Manor hosts a world class music festival featuring traditional American music. The concert takes place on the manor’s expansive waterfront lawn. There will be food trucks, a tent offering local beer and wine, plus a kids activity tent and a petting zoo. Gates to the manor will open at 3 p.m. and the concert begins at 4 p.m. Enter the manor at approximately 55 Manhanset Road. Tickets are $50, to purchase call 631-749-0626 or visit

On Sunday at 3 p.m. you can also stop by the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church for an afternoon of opera classics and Broadway favorites. Hosted by Shelter Island Friends of Music, the concert will feature baritone Dominic Inferrara, who will perform classic music by Verdi, Leoncavallo, Ravel, as well as Broadway hits by Leigh and Darion, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim. There will be a post-concert reception. The concert is free, though donations are appreciated. The Shelter Island Presbyterian Church is located at 32 North Ferry Road. For more information email
